Mountain goat

You need to knit:
  • Three 14 x 24 squares; one for the head and two for the body.
  • One 20 x 6 rectangle for the neck.
  • Four 10 x 24 rectangles for the legs.
  • Two 4 x 6 squares one beige and one white for the tail.
  • Two 4 x 6 squares for the ears.

To make up:
The body
  1. Stitch the two squares together along cast-on and cast-off edges and run a gathering thread around the open ends.
  2. Pull gathering thread, sew one end, add the stuffing and close the other end.
The legs
  1. Stitch all 10*14 rectangle parts lengthwise, pull a gathering thread through one end and leave the other side open to add the stuffing.
  2. Sew the open end of the legs to the body.
The head
  1. Fold the square in half and run a gathering thread at one end and shape the other end to look like a head.
  2. Add stuffing through the open side and pull gathering thread before sewing it shut.
  3. For the ears fold the square in half to make a triangle.
  4. Sew edges of one triangle to the head leaving the other triangle standing up.
  5. For the antlers fold the rectangles in half, sewing it so that one end is pointy and the other is open.
  6. If you have space you can add stuffing. If you use a thicker yarn to knit the antlers this will help making it bulky and therefore no need for stuffing.
  7. Sew them in front of the ears.
  8. Optional: when done sewing draw the thread through the ear and cut in a way where you can still see the thread but is not longer than the ear.
  9. Sew in the eyes, nose and beard.
The tail
  1. Sew the two squares together then sew it to the body.

Knitting all the body parts is straight forward but for the wings you need to follow a specific  pattern:
Wing Pattern:

  • All odd numbered rows are a simple knit pattern.
  • Row 2: s1, k, psso, (k) "13 stitches"
  • Row 4: (k), kpr. "14 stitches"
  • Row 6: s1, k, psso, (k), kpr.

  • Row 18: k2tog, (k), kpr.
  • Row 19: (k), k2tog.

Putting it together

  • To make the head fold one of the squares in half to make a triangle, stitch on the eyes and mouth.
  • For the ears....
  • For the body shape the front square into a pear shape and stitch stitch it to the back piece.
  • Stitch on the wings
  • Get a piece of wire through the body and wrap yarn around it fixing it to the wings and forming the bats fingers; the wire will make the bat's wings flexible but you can skip it.
  • Leave a piece of yarn on the back for the tail.

Abbreviations

  • k: Knit
  • k2tog: knit two stitches together
  • Kpr: knit stitch of previous row to add an extra stitch to the current row.
  • sl1: slip on stitch as if to knit
  • sl1, k, psso: slip one stitch, knit a stitch then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch . When you slip a stitch before a psso, it should be slipped purlwise, meaning from back to front as if you were making a purl stitch, unless otherwise noted in the pattern

Decreasing Scallop Lace Hat.

This is my own twist on a classic knitting pattern. I looked up hats in this pattern and none where what I was looking for. I wanted something that was entirely made of this pattern even as you decrease the number of stitches as you go up and loose the stitch number that you need to form the stitch.
I used an angora/ cotton blend and the smallest double ended needle set I have (size 12 UK, 2 US). I prefer circular needles so if I were to do it again I would just use that instead of the double ended needles which tend to get annoying the less stitches you have.
This pattern needs serious blocking so if you want to use a bigger needle I think casting on 140 stitches is good but for my size 2 needle I cast on 154 stitches. You need a multiple of 14, if you want to be accurate do one round and check the quage but my suggestion is 154 stitches ( 14 st X 11 rounds) for a small needle and 140 (14 st X 10 rounds) for a larger needle and you can guess how many rounds of 14 stitches you want to cast for a baby or for larger heads. I would say these measurements are good for older kids, teenagers and small sized head.
Use markers when you start the pattern, this will help you keep up with the number of stitches for each round and avoid any mistakes.

A small size hat made of an Angora/ Cotton blend, using small sized stitches
What you need
- Size 2 US (12 UK) double ended needles or circular needles. (If you want to use regular needles just replace all the even number rows with a purl stitch instead of a knit stitch and saw it when you finish the work.)
- Angora/ Cotton blend yarn.

Method
Cast on 154 st (14 st X 11 cycles) (or a multiple of 14 stitches)

Edging: *k1, p1*

The French Square Crochet Motif

I wanted to try crochet motifs so I chose this one to be my very first ever crochet motif. Now mine looks different than the original because I used a thicker yarn and a smaller sized needle.

I followed the following YouTube video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HwgY-qZxGg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

This is the main website:
http://newstitchaday.com/how-to-crochet-the-french-square-motif

And here are the written instructions:

USED IN THIS STITCH:

Chain Stitch- ch
Single Crochet- sc
Double Crochet- dc
Triple- tr
Slip Stitch- sl st

Half Double Crochet 3 Together (hdc3tog)- wrap yarn over the hook, insert hook , wrap the yarn again and draw a loop through (3 loops on the hook). Rep this step twice, inserting the hook into the same stitch (7 loops on the hook); wrap the yarn and draw through all the loops on the hook. Work an extra ch st to close the stitch.

Half Double Crochet 4 Together (hdc4tog)- wrap yarn over the hook, insert hook , wrap the yarn again and draw a loop through (4 loops on the hook). Rep this step twice, inserting the hook into the same stitch (7 loops on the hook); wrap the yarn and draw through all the loops on the hook. Work an extra ch st to close the stitch.

Cluster- work 3dc into next st until 1 loop of each remains on hook, yo and through all 4 loops on hook.

Skill: Intermediate
Foundation Chain:Make 6ch, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring.
